Emojis are usually approved in January for device manufacturers to get the new batches so that by September of the same year the new emojis should be in new flagship devices. This however will not be the case in 2021 since the covid-19 has had most contributors busy. The President of the Unicode Consortium , Mark Davis has had to defer the new updates and has forced all volunteers and organizations that depend on the Unicode standard to wait until the following year. This means that the normal release of new emojis for Android and IPhone devices will be delayed until next year.

The year will not go without new emojis though, this is because Unicode Consortium had already approved several new emojis to be shipped with new devices. The new gender neutral Santa Claus emoji and a set of 117 animated characters are set for release later in the year. More on The Verge.
